When a parking lot stops being a truck job and becomes a loader job
The short answer
A pickup with a plough is a pushing machine: it moves snow from where it fell to somewhere else on the same site. That works while there is somewhere else to put it. On a constrained commercial lot the limit arrives sooner than most owners expect — not when a storm is unusually large, but when the cumulative banks from several ordinary storms have eaten the parking spaces, buried the sightlines at the entrance, and left nowhere to push that does not block something. At that point the site needs a machine that lifts and stacks rather than pushes, and eventually one that loads and removes. Recognising the transition early matters because it is cheaper and easier to schedule stacking before the lot is full than to schedule hauling after it is.
The signs the limit has been reached
Parking spaces lost to banks, an entrance where a driver cannot see approaching traffic, a bank that is now higher than a truck blade can climb, meltwater running across a travelled area because the pile sits uphill of a drain, and pedestrian routes narrowing to a single file between piles.
None of those is caused by one storm. All of them are cumulative, which is why they arrive quietly and then all at once.
What each machine is actually for
A truck plough pushes. It is fast, it is right for a lot with room at its margins, and it becomes useless the moment there is nowhere to push to.
A loader or a machine with a pusher box carries and stacks. It can build a pile far higher than a truck can, which converts a two-dimensional storage problem into a three-dimensional one and buys most sites several more storms.
Hauling removes. It is the most expensive option and the only one that resets the site, and it needs a legal, appropriate place to take the snow — which is a decision with drainage and environmental consequences, not just a logistics one.

- Stacking locations become named places on a plan rather than wherever there is room
- A stacking trigger is agreed — the condition at which stacking happens without a separate call
- Sightline areas at entrances and crossings are declared no-stack zones
- Drainage low points and grates are declared no-stack zones
- Someone is named who can authorise hauling, and a cost basis is agreed before it is urgent
- Pedestrian routes are defined by width, so “open” means the same thing to both parties
The mistakes that cost the most
Stacking uphill of the building or of a drain, which turns every thaw into a water problem inside the building or across the travelled surface. Stacking at a corner sightline, which is a safety issue rather than an inconvenience. And leaving the hauling decision until the lot is already full, when the cost is highest and the scheduling is worst.
The one that is easiest to avoid is the last, because it is purely a matter of agreeing in autumn who makes the call and on what basis.

How do I know my lot needs a loader?

It is worth identifying, because a downspout discharging into a plowed area produces ice exactly where people walk or drive.
