What does this calculator actually produce?

A planning range for a property with the dimensions, surface, slope, trigger and service selections you enter, based on the general Champlain Valley cost bands published on this site and checked September 2026. It runs entirely in your browser. It is not a quote, not an offer, and no contractor is bound by it.

Why is the output a range rather than a price?

Because the factors that move winter pricing most — travel efficiency to the property, route position, storage room, backing distance, and the contractor's remaining capacity — are not things a form can know. A calculator that returned a single number would be claiming a precision that does not exist in this trade.

What inputs change the result the most?

Area and surface first, then slope and trigger depth. Property type matters because commercial sites carry pedestrian and documentation obligations that residential ones do not. Town matters least of the inputs, and it mostly stands in for travel rather than for any difference in the work.

Why does driveway length alone not determine the price?

Because a plow spends time turning, backing and repositioning, not just travelling forward. A short drive with no turnaround and cars parked in it can take longer than a straight run twice its length. Width, pitch, backing distance, obstructions and storage capacity all move the number independently of length.

How does surface change the calculation?

Gravel raises it. Gravel needs autumn markers, a modified early-season technique before the base freezes, more careful blade work throughout, and spring stone recovery — all of which is real time that pavement does not require.

How does the trigger depth change the total?

Directly and steeply on a per-push structure: a 2-inch trigger produces materially more billed visits across a Champlain Valley winter than a 3-inch one, on the same snowfall. On a seasonal structure a lower trigger raises the fixed price instead. Either way, the trigger is the single most consequential number in a snow agreement.

Does the calculator include salting or sanding?

Only where those are selected. Treatment is priced separately in this trade — commonly $40–$120 a salt application and $45–$130 a sand application — and a plowing figure that appears to include treatment usually does not.

Does it cover walkways?

Only if selected. Pedestrian clearing is separate work with separate equipment, commonly $25–$75 a visit, and it needs sequencing against plowing so banks do not refill a cleared walk. Assuming walkways are included in a plowing price is one of the more common scope mistakes.

Does it estimate loader work or hauling?

Those are capacity services, triggered by running out of storage rather than by snowfall, so they do not belong in a per-visit estimate. Where they are needed, loader time commonly runs $150–$275 an hour and hauling $200–$450 a truckload.

Is my information sent anywhere when I use it?

No. The calculation happens on your device and the values you enter are not transmitted by using the calculator. Information only leaves your browser if you separately choose to submit the estimate request form.

How should I use the result?

As a sanity check on bids, not as a target. If a quote sits far outside the range, that is a prompt to ask what is different about the property or the scope — a different trigger, a different completion standard, a return pass in or out — rather than evidence that anyone is wrong.

How current are the figures behind it?

Checked September 2026. Ranges reflect commonly advertised Chittenden County residential and commercial winter pricing structures and the cost factors contractors publish in their own scopes. They are a planning aid for comparing bids, not a quote, and no contractor is bound by them.

Can I get an actual price from this?

Not from the calculator, and any tool claiming otherwise is guessing. A real price comes from someone measuring the property, seeing the turnaround and storage, and knowing their own remaining route capacity. The calculator gets you to a sensible conversation faster; it does not replace it.
