What Does a 2-Inch Plowing Trigger Really Mean?
How accumulation triggers, timing, drifting, mixed precipitation, and long storms affect service.
Short answer
A snowfall trigger is the accumulation depth at which a plowing visit happens — commonly 2–3 inches for residential properties and 1–2 inches for commercial ones. It is the single most consequential number in a snow agreement, because on a per-push structure it decides how many visits get billed across a winter, and on a seasonal structure it decides how much service you are entitled to. But the number alone means little: where it is measured, whether long storms get an opening pass, and what happens to a near-miss event matter as much as the figure itself.
Why the trigger is the number that matters
Every other price in a snow agreement is a rate; the trigger is what those rates get multiplied by. On a per-push structure, a two-inch trigger produces materially more billed visits across a Champlain Valley winter than a three-inch trigger on the same snowfall, because more events cross the lower line. On a seasonal structure the effect inverts — a lower trigger raises the fixed price, because the contractor is committing to more visits. Either way, two quotes with identical unit rates but different triggers are not the same deal, and the cheaper-looking one is often the one that will bill or cost more.
This is also why a commercial trigger sits below a residential one. A business admitting the public onto its surfaces carries a duty of care, so it clears sooner, at 1–2 inches or on a zero-tolerance basis. A home clears when the drive stops being comfortably driveable, commonly 2–3 inches. The right trigger is a judgement about consequence and cost, not a default to copy.
The details around the number
Where the depth is measured decides whether the trigger is honest. Two inches at a regional airport station is not two inches on your shaded driveway, and a scope should say the measurement is taken on the property or specify the reference. Then there is the long storm: an event that drops eight inches over eighteen hours needs an opening pass partway through to keep the property usable, then a cleanup pass — and whether the agreement counts that as one visit or two is a real difference in a heavy winter. Finally the near-miss: an event that stops at 1.8 inches under a two-inch trigger, then glazes overnight, is exactly the situation an accumulation-only trigger has no instruction for, which is why ice-control triggers are written by condition rather than by depth.
