Plan Snow Storage Before the First Storm
Protect parking, sightlines, drainage, landscaping, and room for February.
Short answer
Snow storage planning is deciding, in autumn, where every storm's snow will go for the whole winter — because a property that has not decided runs out of room by February and then pays for relocation or hauling at an emergency price. The method is to identify the viable storage areas, rank them in the order they get used, and set the trigger at which stacking, relocation or hauling begins, so each step is a planned expense rather than a 10pm phone call.
Why storage is the constraint nobody plans for
Plowing does not make snow disappear; it moves it to a pile, and the pile grows all winter. Each event adds to the same footprint, and the footprint plus the working room to build it consumes usable space — stalls on a lot, width on a drive, the turnaround at the end of a road. A property that has not identified where snow goes starts losing the space it most needs, usually the prime parking near an entrance, and by mid-winter the only options left are the expensive ones.
The autumn decision is a business decision, not an operational one, especially on a commercial site: which stalls are sacrificed to storage, and in what order. Made in October it is a calm choice; made in February it is a scramble. The same is true residentially at smaller scale — the corner that becomes the pile, the bank that must not block the road sightline, the side of the drive that keeps meltwater off the surface.
The escalation: push, stack, relocate, haul
Storage has a cost ladder, and the point of planning is to climb it slowly. Pushing snow to a ground-level bank is included in normal plowing. When banks grow past what a blade can add to, stacking with a loader — around $150–$275 an hour — builds compact high piles that free the footprint the low piles occupied, and it is usually the cheapest way to buy capacity as long as the site has anywhere to put snow. Relocating within the site is next; hauling off site, at around $200–$450 a truckload plus loader time, is the last and most expensive step.
Where snow is stored matters as much as whether there is room. Piles must sit downgradient of the traffic surfaces so meltwater runs away rather than across them, clear of drainage structures, off accessible spaces, away from building entrances, and never in the public right of way or onto a neighbour. Getting that wrong turns a storage area into the property's main ice source, because a large pile produces meltwater from a single point for days.
