Roof snow load and ice dams are two different problems with two different answers

The short answer

A roof carrying too much weight and a roof forming ice at its edge look similar from the ground and are almost unrelated underneath. Snow load is a structural question about how much mass a roof is carrying and how that mass is distributed, and it gets worse with depth, density and drifting. An ice dam is a thermal question about heat escaping into the roof deck, melting snow from below, and that meltwater refreezing at the cold overhang where it has nowhere to go. Clearing a roof reduces load and may temporarily interrupt a dam, but it does not address the heat loss that caused the dam, which is why the same house forms one every year. Knowing which problem a building has decides whether the answer is a contractor with a roof rake or an insulation and ventilation assessment.

How to tell which one you have

Ice dams announce themselves at the edge: thick ice along the eaves, icicles that grow rather than melt away, staining at the top of an exterior wall, or water appearing inside near an outside wall during a thaw. They form on the parts of the roof that stay cold while the rest is warmed from beneath.

Load problems announce themselves through the structure: doors and windows that suddenly bind, new cracks in interior finishes, visible sag in a ridge or rafter line, or creaking under a heavy accumulation. Drifting matters more than average depth, because a valley or a lower roof beside a taller wall can carry several times what the open field of the roof carries.

Why the answers are different

Reducing load is a removal job. Reducing ice-dam formation is a building-envelope job — air sealing, insulation and ventilation — because the cause is heat reaching the underside of the roof deck.

That is why a building that has its roof cleared every winter can still form the same dam every winter. The removal treats the symptom on the day, and the cause is still there the following week.

What not to do

  • Do not chip or hack at ice on a roof edge — it damages roofing and it does not address the melt above it
  • Do not put a heat source, an open flame or salt directly on a roof surface without knowing what that roofing tolerates
  • Do not work from a ladder set on ice, in wind, or beside a live overhead service
  • Do not clear only the eaves and leave the field loaded, which concentrates weight rather than reducing it
  • Do not assume last winter's safe depth applies this winter — density varies enormously between storms

When to ask for help immediately

Structural signs — binding doors, new cracking, visible deflection, sounds from the structure under load — are reasons to leave the building and get a qualified opinion rather than to get on the roof. So is any ice or water problem near an electrical service entrance.

Neither this site nor a snow contractor is the right party for a structural judgement. A roof rake removes snow; it does not tell you whether the structure was in trouble.

Questions to settle before the snow flies

Is roof snow removal part of a normal plowing agreement?

No. It is a separate service with separate risk and it is almost never implied by a driveway or lot agreement.

How much snow is too much on a roof?

It depends on density and on the structure, not on depth alone. Wet snow can weigh several times what the same depth of powder weighs, so a number from one storm does not transfer to another.

Do icicles mean I have an ice dam?

Persistent, growing icicles along an eave usually indicate melt from above refreezing at a cold edge, which is the mechanism of a dam. Occasional icicles during a warm spell are less telling.

Will clearing the roof stop ice dams?

It can interrupt one, but it does not remove the heat loss that caused it, so the dam usually returns.

Is salt safe on a roof?

It depends on the roofing material and the drainage below it, and it can damage plantings and masonry where the runoff lands. It is not a general answer.

Should I clear the eaves first?

Clearing only the eaves and leaving the field loaded concentrates weight higher up. Load reduction should be even.

What about a lower roof beside a taller wall?

That is where drifting concentrates, and it commonly carries far more than the main roof field. It deserves attention first.

Are metal roofs safe from this?

They shed more readily, which brings its own hazard — a released slab of snow is dangerous to anything below, including entrances and vehicles.

My doors started sticking after a storm. What does that mean?

It can indicate structural deflection under load. That is a reason to get a qualified opinion promptly rather than to climb up and investigate.

Can I do this from a ladder?

Working from a ladder on ice, in wind, or near an overhead electrical service is how people are seriously injured every winter. A roof rake used from the ground is a different proposition from being on the roof.

Who assesses an ice-dam cause?

A weatherisation or building-envelope professional, because the cause is in the attic and the insulation rather than on the roof.

Does this site arrange roof work?

This site publishes planning information and passes service requests to independent contractors. Roof snow removal, where a contractor offers it, is theirs to scope, price and perform.
